Have you ever noticed that there are some books that, when you carry them around, make people want to start conversations with you?
(The Stand was a big one for this. Also, The Man in the High Castle.)
Why do I bring it up?
Because I just started A Game of Thrones.

ReplyDeleteDont do it! It's a trap! Wait til he finishes the series, and since that's never going to happen you'll avoid all the frustration.
ReplyDeleteI have read Tigana. I like Tigana. But Tigana may be the weakest of Guy Gavriel Kay's books, and it's not nearly as good as ASOIAF.

ReplyDeleteI'm nearing the end of A Feast for Crows. Although part of me wants to rush through it and start A Dance With Dragons... I don't want to end up like everybody else waiting for the next book. :P Also, what happens when the TV series catches up with the books? Something like the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime?
I must live in a really geeky town, because the book that started the most conversation for me was "The Cathedral and the Bazaar"
ReplyDeleteOne of the great wonders of using a Kindle is that nobody can tell what I'm reading. Bible verses, science fiction, bomb-making recipes, the most perverse pornography imaginable... unless you're reading over my shoulder, it all looks like a little grey flatscreen.

ReplyDeleteGreat series but if you want something more cynical and mature you could try Abercrombie's First Law. It is very, very good. After all, you got to be realistic about these things.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I had conversations start due to a book I was carrying... was disturbing. I had grabbed a work of fiction, start of a long series I'd never heard of... and half my coworkers appeared to be fans. Dropping cryptic remarks like "A fictional account of a True event." Now... when a guy who you think doesn't read sci-fi is saying that, it's worrying. When your grandmother, a devout catholic, who has no idea where the sci-fi section of the library is... is a fan? Time for research.
ReplyDeleteThe book was "Left Behind". Turns out, the pilot turning into a cynical, manipulative fanatic? That's not character development to create a nuanced and varied cast with some heroes and some villains... that drive to push his daughter to salvation through every underhanded method available to his simple brain... is what you're meant to cheer on. I ran screaming from the series.
I started Game of Thrones book one a little while ago, its pretty awesome :)
