The gaming site GameBanshee was kind enough to call our newest game, Avernum 6, in their annual awards. We were runner-ups in the Independent RPG of the Year and RPG Game of the Year categories. Thank you very much!
This sort of thing is exciting to me, and not just because of the obvious self-esteem and greed motivations. The recession has been really rough on the gaming press, and, because of that, it's been rough on us. Many of the writers and editors who liked to cover us lost their jobs, and many of the small news outlets that were willing to cover humble Indie games like ours disappeared or were absorbed. It's been depressing.
The hardest part about being a small Indie is getting attention. Press coverage is oxygen. It takes the tenacity of the cockroach to eventually find editors who are willing to say, "Sure, they're small, but I believe in what they're doing. I'm going to back them up." And, when it happens (such as the recent coverage of us in PC Gamer), I'm incredibly grateful.

You should look at Recettear and Carpe Fulgur's strategy for getting press. They went after the more specialized publications, and built their reputation from there.

I just searched a couple of the RPG oriented sites I visit and couldn't find any mention of Avernum on either of them aside from the forums. You should try to court the smaller sites like they mention. (Search for RPGFan to find a few sites they mentioned.)

I gotta dumb question. Game culture is one thing so this might seem odd but do you think it's possible to get buy a copy of your game for a premium amount that had signatures of some of the developers? Yours in particular but clearly, games are a collaborative effort. I just don't know all those other people off hand to include them as potentials.
ReplyDeleteSeth brings up a good point. "Limited edition" game packages could be a good item. Blizzard's overkill type of merchandising is out of the question; massive branded daggers and axes, cold-cast statuettes, soft drink cross-promotions? No, Spiderweb's fans would be happy to see some CafePress-style merchandise, perhaps game art prints, or a mug that displays a fyora or a cryoa when holding hot or cold liquid. ;)

(2) An off-topic technical point.. the hyperlink on the AvernumVI logo is actually to the GIF file for the logo. Is that intentional? Shouldn't it be to the Avernum website or sub-page on Spiderweb?
(3) It appears some of the other images are equally wonky.
