Avernum 6 For Windows Released

We have finally released Avernum 6, the final game in the Avernum saga, for Windows. The game has been a huge success for us on the Mac end, and we're very happy to finally have it available for all of our customers. If you like huge, Indie role-playing games with a retro flair, you could do worse than to check it out.

Having worked on this storyline for fifteen years now, it feels weird to bring it to an end. And liberating, too. I am making a whole new game world, game engine, etc., and I hope to blog about the ins and outs of that process plenty in the next year.

Edit: By the way, prior experience with the Avernum games is completely unnecessary to enjoy Avernum 6. I figured out early on that sequels should always provide easy entry for new players. Especially when they have a number as high as 6 after the name.

  1. Nice! I'm a total newcomer to the Avernum games. Even though this is the 6th game in the series, can I still jump into the game story at this point? Or is recommended to go back and play through all of the originals first?

  4. @mmcglumphy: You can definitely jump in at this point without having to back track 5 games, as the story of Avernum is told over several decades with different characters (i.e. parties of adventurers). Some NPCs have made it between several of the games (all of them, in some cases, the old fogies) but it is not critical to know the story of the previous incarnations to enjoy this one. All relevant plot will be presented as you need it.

    If you want to see firsthand how this story originally unfolded, you can definitely start from game 1 and on but the series, like Geneforge, is designed so that you can come in at any point and enjoy, regardless if you're a veteran or newcomer.

  6. Since people typically don't buy older versions when a spanking new one is out - why not always bundle old games with a new release? Or have the option of adding the older games for an additional $5...just a thought.

    This is not the case. We sell plenty of older games.

    I will not sell a full-length game for $5. $15, maybe, if it's old. $5, no.

  12. @mmcglumphy: a warning - after playing one Avernum game, you will desperately want to play them all. And then you will start wailing and gnashing your teeth because there is no Avernum 7... :(
